In Virginia, there is no specific 'handyman' license; instead, you need a contractor's license if your project's total cost of labor and materials exceeds $1,000.  An unlicensed Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) contractor performing work valued over $1,000 cannot enforce their contract in Virginia.  It is your responsibility as a homeowner to verify a contractor's license with the Virginia DPOR before hiring them, as they may not be liable for information found on their website.

*Licensed to operate via business license and DPOR contractor licensing are two different things people often confuse.

**Handymen services often have a DPOR home improvement contractor (HIC) license that falls into 'A, B, C' categories.
